World Crops of Cambridge and Somerville
About the Farm
Established in 2011 the South Street Farm is Somerville's first urban farm! The farm was transformed from what was once two paved parking lots into an incredible urban farm and community green space. Since establishment Groundwork Somerville has been committed to growing healthy and affordable food for the Somerville community both selling produced through the Somerville Mobile Farmers’ Market and donating produce to local food pantries(such as Project Soup).
Working to best serve the local community, Groundwork began to grow crops which are familiar to the many immigrants living in the local community. Beginning with crops such as jilo and callaloo to serve the Haitian and Brazilian communities, Groundwork has goals to grow a variety of culturally appropriate crops to serve the community.
After an incredibly successful season selling jilo and callaloo in 2015, the Groundwork team is planning to expand the crop diversity grown to crops such as roma tomatoes cilantro, etc.
